Uncool Laurence (@UncoolLaurence) – Laid Off Nigga Rap

My name is Uncool Laurence (pronounced Uncle Laurence), an up and coming rap artist from Los Angeles. I picked the name Uncool Laurence means a number of things; one, I’ve been an uncle since the age of 5. Two, because of the common misconception that I’m a nerd cause of my unique, well spoken, demeanor, and lastly cause my overall message is to do you and not focus on conformity. My goal as an MC is bring substance and lyricism back to the game, but still have enough mass appeal and charm to not be classified as strictly underground. My biggest influences are Kanye West, Redman, J. Cole, and Ghostface Killah. To solidify my lyrical skills, I won KING Magazine’s monthly “Gotta Win” contest three times.

Aside from my music grind, I worked in the corporate world for the past 9 years. After getting I laid off for an unknown reason, I put life into perspective and pursue my music again. That struggle helped me craft an 8-track EP, The Wave, and the following track, Laid Off Nigga Rap.

Megaciph (@megaciph) – CIVIL.i.AM

A rally cry for our times, CIVIL.i.AM says Black Lives Matter, it says I Can’t Breathe and it says Hands Up Don’t Shoot. Incorporating Native American samples with Trap beats the song blends the voices/sounds and imagery of oppressed groups. Trap music, born of the myth that the only good job in the hood is dealing drugs so drug dealer culture becomes generational and unquestionable if not outright celebrated. Likewise the Native American is the single most oppressed group in North America with less than 1% of US population on land they used to number in the tens of millions. The story line is from the perspective of a victim of racial profiling, as a man of color in America. There is not one violent lyric throughout although the tone is unflinching in its call for immediate change of social norms.
